Making the Pod: Adopt the Right Mindset

Adopt the Right Mindset

Welcome to episode 1 of Making the Pod. Today, I’m starting from the very beginning of my guide on podcasting, which means I’m defining my mindset for success.

About Making the Pod

Hey, I’m Lauren Popish, founder of The Wave Podcasting. I help women start and grow podcasts. I recently sunset my original podcast and have decided to create a new one focused on, well, podcasting. I’m taking you along as I build this podcast from day one. Be sure to hit subscribe and hit the bell notification over on YouTube so you never miss an episode. You can start from the beginning or pick up anywhere in the series and start learning. Welcome to Making The Pod.

Why Mindset Matters

I recently sunset my podcast that started the whole crazy podcasting journey for me. It was called Book Wine Club. I decided to sunset it, because it just wasn’t serving me anymore. I will be the first person to tell you that starting and maintaining a podcast takes a lot of effort. If there isn’t a clear place that you want your podcast to take you, it can be really hard to justify the effort of growing it.

But, I know how beneficial podcasting can be for a business, which is why I am starting a new podcast that will support my company. Yep, it's going to be a podcast about podcasting.

I’m going to use the exact method and tools that I recommend to my clients. I think they call this eating your own dog food, but I don’t totally understand that phrase. The structure for this series will be provided by my Complete Guide to Podcasting that I launched in September. It is designed to take you through launching and growing a podcast from the very beginning, so I’m going to use the templates and workflow to make sure I don’t miss anything.

Today I’m starting with the first chapter of the guide, which is called Adopt the Right Mindset

This is something that is so easy to skip, because it doesn’t really seem like it is getting you any closer to launching a podcast. The real challenge of any new project, including podcasting, is the internal battle that occurs after all the logistics are complete. It takes five minutes to buy a microphone on Amazon, but it takes real daily practice to develop the discipline you need to wake up, do your day job, and then turn your attention to recording, editing, and promoting your podcast. Only to start all over the next day. This step is about setting a foundation of success that starts in your mind long before you ever get to the mic.

Questions for Your Mindset

I’ve filled out the three questions in the mindset section about the impact I want my podcast to have, what I will miss out on if I don’t take this step, and what will keep me motivated once I inevitably lose steam down the road.

For me, helping women start podcasts is all about diversifying the perspectives we hear on a daily basis. The hurdles that exist when starting a podcast affect marginalized demographics more significantly, which means your media is less diverse than it should be. Creating a podcast that is an extension of my business just means I get to further our mission. And if I don’t start this podcast, I will feel like a total hypocrite.

The motivational words and actions section of the guide are tougher. I find exhaustion, imposter syndrome, and burnout to be very powerful forces. I like to look at others I admire, who I know have gotten to where they are with supreme discipline and integrity. So, I’m going to say that when I’m in need of inspiration, I will ask what would Amy Porterfield, Pat Flynn, Elise Darma, and Jenna Kutcher do? They have as many hours in the day I do - they just chose to use them to build an empire.

Affirmations for Your Mindset

Now onto affirmations. Affirmations are great confidence boosters, but they won’t necessarily solve the problem of discipline or habit building when it comes to starting this journey. Still, they can give you a big burst of excitement that will push you over some of those easy roadblocks like procrastination or fear. Quickly, I’m going to visualize a time I felt supremely confident.

And I’m going to say these affirmations out loud.

I wrote them down on cards so I could refer back to them when I need a little kick in the butt. All of these different motivational strategies are serving the same purpose - to get your head straight so you can stop thinking and start doing. Don’t write them off without giving it a try, but once you find a motivation method that works, double down on that.

Conclusion

I hope you’re loving the new series. If you want to follow along with the entire journey, be sure to subscribe and hit that bell notification over on YouTube. I have an excerpt of the exact guide I’m using to launch my podcast available for free right here. In the next episode, we’re going to cover common roadblocks to launching a podcast and defining your why. We’ll see you next time on Making the Pod.
